The Ghostway By Author Tony Hillerman
From the author of Sacred Clowns and A Thief Of Time, comes the highly suspenseful The Ghostway. Jim Chee is at it again with another whodunit by author Tony Hillerman. This is the sixth book in the Navajo Detective series. The New York Times reviewed The Ghostway as being one of the best of the series.
The Ghostway takes place in Shiprock, New Mexico and starts off with an 81-year-old man named Joseph Joe. As Joseph Joe was walking towards his daughter's truck, a stranger, driving a brand new car, slows down and leans out the car window. He tells Joe that he is looking for a man named Gorman. Joe explains that he isn't from the town, but the driver is insistent and takes out a photograph and explains that this is who he is looking for.
Another car comes on the scene and the driver gets out to talk to the driver of the other vehicle. He notices Joseph Joe standing there and tells him to go away. Next thing he knows shots are fired. The driver of the second vehicle lies dead on the ground and the first driver drives away.
Jim Chee is on the case that has him trying to find the keys to the puzzle of the disappearance of Joseph Joe and his daughter. Usually Hillerman's novels have no romance in them at all, but this one comes close with Chee's interest in a white teacher. There may be more going on than just romantic conversation.
