Everyone has a favorite author and repeatedly sticks to their novels, especially as new ones are released. Many people have been enjoying the novels of Tony Hillerman for several decades. His works are normally set in the western deserts of New Mexico and Arizona and always focus on his two main characters, Lt. Leaphorn and Officer Jim Chee. These two men usually work on separate cases and, as is Hillerman’s style, the cases end up being connected.
Tony Hillerman created Talking God, one of his gripping novels with suspense and intrigue, in 1989. The story, like all of the others, focuses on Lt. Leaphorn and Officer Jim Chee, but it does not take place in the desert. Unlike most of his other novels, the majority of this story takes place in Washington DC. The story has both men investigating a murder and the theft of the ancient and sacred bones of Jim Chee’s ancestors. In the tradition of Hillerman’s novels, it becomes more and more apparent that the two cases are related as the story continues. There is also a newcomer to the novel in the form of Janet Pete, who has recently moved to Washington and has a background in law. Hillerman’s novels are very popular for their gripping tales of mystery and supernatural themes that focus on Navajo gods and ghosts.
Talking God is one of Tony Hillerman’s great novels and is an enjoyable read for anyone looking for a good crime and suspense story. Whether you are a die-hard Hillerman fan or this is your first time reading one of his books, you will not be disappointed in this tale.
